Cathode ray tubes (CRTs) in TVs and computer monitors contain 4-8 pounds of lead, which is hazardous.

Consumer electronics may be responsible for up to 40 percent of the lead found in landfills. Lead is very hazardous to our health. That’s why Dcal Services sends its recycled CRTs to a smelter where the lead is recovered and the glass recycled.

Other disassembled parts of old computers and televisions are recycled. Plastic is ground up and recycled for use in various items such as pothole mix and retaining blocks. Circuit boards, chips and other parts can be re-used to repair or upgrade older electronics or recycled for their scrap value. Metal components are separated and sold for scrap value.
